Education Courses in audio-visual communication for schools. Since the 1980s L'Aquila Film Institute "La Lanterna Magica" has conducted projects in schools at all levels aimed at studying film and audiovisual language. At the moment the Institute is working in conjunction with the International Academy of Image Arts and Sciences to provide adequate training to pupils in reading and understanding moving images in film and television. The importance of "visual literacy" is approached in two ways; courses on reading film and introductory courses on practical film making. The aim is to provide students with a theoretical approach to understand audiovisual texts and the opportunity to put the theory into practice. The availability of Cinema Massimo has allowed lessons to be held in a modern multi-media environment that projects the students directly into the world of cinema. This is achieved with the aid of the technology available in the cinema which includes large format video projectors which screen clips from classic films. A guided tour of the cinema allows students to discover the hidden secrets of a cinema theatre. Cinema Massimo is in an Art Deco building which has been meticulously restored. Almost all the schools in the area and across the region have been involved in these educational projects over the years. Special projects have also been conducted in various schools around the city for "La giornata della Memoria" (History Day), for the week dedicated to the Arts involving Legambiente, and for "Giornata dell'infanzia" (Children's Day) together with the Provincial government of L'Aquila. Educational activities have been especially organised for institutions such as "la Scuola Superiore di Telecomunicazioni Guglielmo Reiss Romoli" (Telecommunications School) and The University of L'Aquila. Events have also been arranged for the local Health Authority involving a series of lessons at San Salvatore Hospital and special screenings of films on Psychiatry and Cinema (with over 3500 spectators per year). Other collaborations have included the local council of Castel del Monte (organising speakers for conferences on cinema and schools), Adult Education (an ongoing collaboration with annual events), and with various municipal tourist boards and local councils. |
