The Cinema in the City In 2002 L'Aquila Film Institute "La Lanterna Magica" and the International Academy of Image Arts and Sciences took on the task of re-opening and restoring the historical cinema theatre which had been closed for many years and risked being demolished. The action taken by both organisations was decisive and, despite the difficulties that were encountered, they succeeded in saving the Cinema Massimo. Apart from its historical importance Cinema Massimo was the only remaining auditorium for film and other cultural events available in the centre of the region capital city. It has now become a place that is associated with quality cinema and new releases. It is also seen as the ideal location for festivals, debates, conferences and special presentations. The cinema boasts the latest video and audio technology and the auditorium is suitable for a wide variety of performances. The film screen can be raised to gain access to the traditional proscenium arch stage. In fact, during the 1950s the auditorium was used for revue, and theatre. |
